About Us

John Courtney is the founder of Courtney Investigations. He is a former Chief Superintendent in the Gardai(Irish Police Force) and has vast experience in the security and private investigations industry.

In 1979 John Courtney, as Detective Superintendent, was placed in overall charge of the Murder Squad(Serious Crimes Squad).He led the investigation relative to many famous cases, such as the murder of Captain Robert Nairac, a British Army undercover agent. Mr Courtney also led inquiries into the murder of former Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten and members of his family in County Sligo.

Mr Courtney led the investigation into the murder of Bridget (Bridie) Gargan and the subsequent arrest of Malcolm McArthur, who was convicted of her murder. He was in charge of the investigation into the kidnapping of Dutch industrialist, Dr Teide Herrema and, in 1983, the kidnapping of supermarket executive, Mr Don Tidey. Mr Courtney also insisted on the retention of blood evidence with regard to the murder of Phyllis Murphy in 1979.The DNA in this evidence was later used in the prosecution of her murderer- the first time DNA evidence was successfully used in a murder prosecution in Ireland.

In addition to training in Ireland, Mr Courtney completed courses at the Police College, Wakefield, Yorkshire and at New Scotland Yard, London. He has given lectures at Trinity College Dublin and the Garda Training Centre, Templemore. He has also held day conferences with bank managers with regard to security advice.

Mr Courtney remains a hands-on owner/operator and he remains involved in the company’s day to day operations. Courtney Investigations only employ experienced staff with a high level of expertise and achievement in the security and private investigations industry.
